Niche and Mainstream Audiences
Mainstream Audience - Mainstream is a term used to describe the general populations taste towards music, Mainstream music is designed to appeal to as many people as it can- and is the music played on most popular radio stations
This is an example of Mainstream music that is played repetatively on Radio 1, although it may not appeal to some people, such as myself- this music is intended to be played by the majority, hence why very little other music is played.
Niche Audience - Niche is a term used to describe a selective audience, this music is not designed to appeal to everyones taste, but to the taste of the individuals that have a selective interest in the type of music being played.
An example of a Niche audience could be listeners to Choice Fm, this is classed as an "Urban Radio Station" this means that it only plays R'n'B and Rap music. This is an example of a Niche as only people that enjoy the "Urban" genre will listen.. here is an example of some of the music that is played on Choice FM
